Drafty doors and windows often go unnoticed in the warmer months but when cold weather hits, doors and windows that let in cold air require attention. Not only are they letting cold air into our warm homes, they are letting money slip through the cracks, too. Our home heating systems have to work harder to combat the constant infiltration of cold air which means more energy used and more money spent! This DIY Draft Stopper is a quick and easy way to cut down on the cool air coming through the cracks at the bottoms of your doors or windows. It’s also a stylish way to do so when you use fun fabrics to match your space!
In case you want to buy a ready made Draft Stopper, here are the best ones we have selected from Amazon
The DIY Draft Stopper blocks the cold air from coming in at the base of your doors and sills of your windows. When less cold air is coming into your home it means your heating system can more easily maintain a comfortable temperature which saves on your electric or gas bill in the long run!
Who doesn’t want to save on their gas or electric bill?!?
Supplies Needed:
- Fabric in your choice of color and pattern
- Poly-fil or other stuffing for the inside of the pillow
- Sewing machine fitted with coordinating thread
- Scissors
Instructions:
Begin by cutting your fabric into a strip approximately 8″ wide x 1 1/2″ longer than the door or window the draft stopper will be placed in front of.
Fold the strip in half lengthwise with the right side of the fabric facing in.
Sew the raw edges of the fabric together along 1 short end and the long side, allowing approximately 1/2″ seam, creating a long tube.
Turn the tube you’ve created right side out.
Stuff the tube with your stuffing until it is full and firm.
When the tube is full, tuck the open end edges inside and carefully sew the end together with your machine.
The DIY Draft Stopper can be used at exterior doors, doors to unheated areas of your home, or on the sill of drafty windows. Make them in a variety of fabrics to match your home’s decor and use in any rooms where you feel you may be losing heat. This is a fun, energy-saving, DIY project!
