Should You Build Your Own Carport?

by

A carport is a relatively easy structure to build, and the money and time invested in the construction of one will quickly pay off. A combination of bird droppings, harmful paint-fading UV rays from the sun, and storm-induced damage can QUICKLY diminish the appearance of your car, and sometimes even cause damage (such as chipped paint from hail, or a cracked windshield from debris that is blown about during a strong storm).carport

Why choose a carport over a traditional garage? For starters, a garage requires more physical space, as it has a foundation, a cement floor, and thick walls comprised of brick. The time and money spent constructing a garage are significantly more as well.

And if you move, you can’t take a garage with you. A carport, on the other hand, requires less space than a garage, doesn’t take as much time to build, and doesn’t cost as much in materials or manpower.

And, unless it is permanently attached to the side of another structure (such as your house), it can be dismantled and taken with you should you decide to move.

Carports are available in single, double, and even triple vehicle widths. They can be of varying heights and depths, so if you have an extra tall vehicle to house, such as a recreational vehicle, or you want to house a boat, you’ll be able to do so with relative ease, while still having room for your regular vehicle.

And whether your carport is attached to the side of your home or free-standing, you can make it match the appearance of your home perfectly. You can even install skylights and electricity, should you decide that your carport needs some fun “extras”!

When it comes to the construction of a carport, there are many DIY kits available, such as the Patio Living carports kits. Sweet-talk a few friends with pizza and beer, and within a day or two you’ll have a finished carport waiting for you to park your vehicle underneath it.

And if you should decide that building your own carport is not for you, many companies have contracts with local architects and builders who will gladly build one for you.
