One of the password reminder questions on a website I use is “What is a food you’ve always liked?” My answer is pizza. I remember when I was in high school we’d go to the Arden Fair Mall in Sacramento. A group of us always hung out at the food court and when we got hungry, we headed straight to Sbarro for a slice of pepperoni pizza. Even back then, the pizza was AMAZING. So when Sbarro asked me to review their new X‐treme Double Duo Pepperoni pizza, I was all over it like sauce on…well, pizza.
I have to say the quality and taste I remember really hasn’t changed much. If anything, the pizza has gotten even better. For me, Sbarro is one of those flavors that bring back memories. I take a bite and all of a sudden there I am in the food court at 15 years old talking with my friends about the latest MTV countdown. (Funny how if you go to the food court at the mall now you see a group of teenagers doing the exact same thing! They’re more like their parents then they know.) Today, there are more options, including many delicious salad and pasta dishes, but the great taste I grew up loving is still there. It’s no wonder the company has been steadily growing since 1956. Today, there are more than 800 eateries in 40 countries. That’s a testimony in itself to some great quality pizza.
Part of the reason I love it so much is that it’s made fresh and in‐house. Each day, the dough is hand stretched for each pie and baked to perfection. The cheese is super cheesy (just the way I like it), the sauce has a perfect balance of herbs and spices, and the new X‐treme Double Duo Pepperoni pizza is AH‐mazing! Sbarro really sets the bar with the two types of pepperoni layered between 100% whole milk mozzarella and pepper jack cheeses. Then they take it one step further and sprinkle some grated Romano cheese and a dash of oregano on top. It’s an exciting and bold flavor that’s kind of hard to describe. All I can say is that you need to try it! Hurry though – it’s only available for a limited time. (Maybe if enough people try it and love it, Sbarro will be convinced this new pizza needs a permanent spot on the menu.) For more information or to find your nearest Sbarro, visit www.sbarro.com.
